love the smell of garlic, of asafoetida, of the curry boiling, and a dash of garam masala. And as I embark on a weight loss journey (counting the calories for each meal, reading the fine print on boxes), I discover how my Indian kitchen is extremely healthy. Be proud of the chapattis

It is the healthiest bread that can accompany your food. Wheat cooked on low flame — for the calorie-conscious, it is what the experts advise. An easy way to do it is to keep a roti maker

Count on ‘dal’ for all your problems

It is a must on every kitchen shelf and can give you options galore. For weight watchers, the best way to consume dal it is to drink its soup or sprout it. Just about any dal can be sprouted and with a sprinkle of chat masala, it becomes a refreshing treat. Or better still, use various dal aatas available easily in the market to get a balanced meal experience.

Garlic for all occasions

For those who want to avoid the oil and the ‘tadka’ a great tip is to add cloves of garlic for a rich taste. Garlic helps you keep all your gastric problems at bay and is great for the stomach too. Develop a taste for it and you wouldn’t want to miss it in any dish. A great tip — make your life convenient by getting a garlic peeler and chopper!

Make cinnamon your best friend

Next time you want to put sugar in any of your drinks or food, substitute it with cinnamon powder. It will work wonders for your taste buds and your digestion too.

Garam masala to help you fight diseases

Our spices not only give us that unique taste but also help us maintain immunity. The traditional garam masala is a mix of all our masalas for a great tasting meal. However, it also helps us maintain our body’s immune system.

Turmeric for healing

Our parents and their parents have been advising us for generations about turmeric’s antiseptic properties. In times of a wound or an injury, put in a spoon or two of turmeric (popularly called haldi) in your milk, and you are sure to heal at a faster rate.

So for all you weight watchers, your regular Indian kitchen is waiting for you to look at it in a new ‘light!’
